OBJECTIVES OF THE\u00a0PRACTICE<\/strong><\/mark><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Streaming of Part \u2013 II English students is one of the best and long standing academic practices of Fatima College. The main objectives of streaming of students for Part \u2013 II English are:<ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>To place the learner in a\u00a0homogenous ambience\u00a0where the teacher teaches based on the comfort level\/pace of the learners.<\/li><li>To enable the teachers to cater to the\u00a0diverse learning abilities\u00a0of the students.<\/li><li>To produce customized materials according to the level of the streams and to emphasize the joy of learning.<\/li><li>To create scope for\u00a0equal opportunities\u00a0for placement by bringing the disadvantaged learners into the mainstream.<\/li><li>To\u00a0evolve best practices in teaching-learning\u00a0that would bridge the gap between slow and advanced level learners.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><mark><strong>3. THE CONTEXT<\/strong><\/mark><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Fatima College has a progressive policy of\u00a0inclusivity and plurality. It is the vision and mission of the institution to empower women through holistic and innovative education. Hence, the college reaches out to the first generation learners who are mostly schooled in the Tamil medium. It is challenging for them to cope with academics when they enter an English-speaking environment. This is reflected in their low scores not only in Part- II English but the major subjects as well, as the medium of instruction is English.<\/li><li>The Management, in consultation with The Research Centre of English, decided that the best way to integrate the slow and average learners would be to stream them in their Part-II English classes.<\/li><li>From 1991 till 2001, students were streamed into three levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Texts available in the market were prescribed. The department, based on a workshop on \u2018Material Production,\u2019 prepared customized texts for the three levels.
